Molecular Data
Compound Overview
Semax is a synthetic peptide analog of ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), specifically the 4-10 fragment with an added Pro-Gly-Pro C-terminal tripeptide for enhanced stability. Originally developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Semax has been the subject of extensive research for its nootropic and neuroprotective properties. It is one of the most studied cognitive enhancement peptides in peer-reviewed literature.
Reported Mechanism (Preclinical)
Semax exerts its effects through multiple neurological pathways: it increases BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) expression, modulates serotonergic and dopaminergic systems, enhances NGF (nerve growth factor) synthesis, and activates melanocortin receptors (MC3R and MC4R). Research suggests it may improve synaptic plasticity, enhance memory consolidation, and provide neuroprotection against oxidative stress and excitotoxicity.
Mechanisms described above are reported in preclinical (animal and in vitro) literature and have not been established for human use.
Key Research Highlights
